HUMAN RIGHT

Womens rights are human rights

Human right to health

  • We recognise that maternal mortality reduction requires an environment that empowers women and respects their rights to health.
  • The right to health includes entitlements to goods and services, including reproductive and maternal health care and information.
  • It requires action to break down political, economic, social and cultural barriers that women face in accessing the interventions that can prevent maternal mortality.
  • The need for the right to health should lie at the heart of the human rights response maternal mortality.
  • The right to health is intimately connected to other human rights – including the rights to life and education – which are also highly relevant in the struggle against maternal mortality.

Human right to health

Receiving better health care and health knowledge is only a fraction of the many realities faced by women in Sierra Leone. The high rate of maternal mortality is exacerbated by discrimination and the low status of women in Sierra Leone. Girls and women in Sierra Leone face discrimination and violence that directly affect their right to health and prevent them from accessing the health services they need during pregnancy and childbirth.

Human right to health

Therefore, MHC works with community leaders to understand and address the reasons for the high maternal death rate. We raise awareness about social and gender norms so women can make decisions for their own health and well-being.
